Cold Weather Base Remix

My love for By Terry's Densiliss Foundation is well documented (for example, here, here and here). Paired with the By Terry Densiliss Primer, this base is truly unstoppable and provides my dull winter skin with a glowing, radiant semi-matte finish that lasts all day. That being said, each of these babies come out to $115 for a 1 oz. bottle (here's to hoping my mother never reads this...), so while they are two definite HG products, they're also far too expensive for everyday use. Because of the massive price tag, I've had to reshop my collection and find some other bases that will bring a bit of light to my winter skin.

Luckily I found two choices (plus a primer!) that tick off all my very picky needs. The primer I'm talking about is the cult favorite Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer, a white mineral-based primer that provides any makeup with a lasting, satin finish. I actually picked up a travel size of this bad boy after reading of its similarities to my beloved Densiliss primer, but I actually found the two to be quite different. While they look about the same, I find that the By Terry option is far more hydrating and radiance producing, versus the satin finish and longevity of Hourglass' primer. That might make it sound like I prefer the Densiliss version, but that's actually not the case at all. I find that Densiliss is perfect for special occasions and days my skin needs a real pick me up, and Hourglass is for long days of work when I know I won't be able to reapply my makeup for awhile. While neither are cheap, I will say that I find myself needing less of the Hourglass product to cover my face than Densiliss, meaning I expect the $18 travel bottle to last me a fair amount of time.

When it comes to a base, the two options I've been reaching for in lieu of my Densiliss are somewhat similar to each other. These bases are Chantecaille's Just Skin Tinted Moisturizer in Bliss and Diorskin's Nude BB Creme in Fair 002. Last summer and spring I got a lot of use out of Chantecaille's option, which I wore in the shade Glow (oh how I miss being tan). This is a tinted moisturizer that packs a punch, providing hydration and medium coverage all while looking beautifully natural. It's a bit of a thick, creamy option, so it's certainly different than Densiliss, but it provides a similarly glowing, skin-like finish that I adore. Diorskin's Nude BB is one that I picked up last spring as well, and I love it for its light-to-medium coverage and satin-y finish. Not quite dewy, not quite matte, the finish to this is very natural and skin-like (starting to see a trend here?). Both have been lovely options, and ones that I'm glad to have come back to after all this time.

  1. The Dior BB Cream is next on my list. I am currently using La Roche Posay CC Cream for no-makeup day and love it but the Dior one sounds amazing too.
