Dakota Johnson Inspired

Confession time: I have read all three Fifty Shades of Grey books. I know, I know, I'm disappointed in myself too. They're truly terribly written, and my only excuse is they were a mind numbing guilty pleasure that I read on a beach vacation a few summers back. Anyways, moving on. Love 'em or hate 'em, just about everyone seems to have heard about these books, and unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably have heard about the upcoming movie adaptation as well.

The trailer went live yesterday, and upon watching it I had three thoughts: 1) I cannot wait until the new version of Crazy In Love is available to download, 2) The Sheriff from Once Upon a Time (oh, wait, I guess it's Christian Grey now) is a drool-worthy babe, and 3) Dakota Johnson looks gorgeous, and I'm kind of obsessed with how they styled her hair and makeup. Thoughts 1 + 2 were probably running through most everyone's minds, but as a beauty addict I pick up on random things like thought 3. Perhaps a very strange thing to pick up from the trailer of a movie about BDSM, but I digress.

Me being the weirdo I am, I decided to take a little inspiration from the minimalistic hair and makeup that Dakota Johnson is showcasing in the trailer. The movie might be eye rolling-ly terrible (especially if EL James had anything to do with screenwriting) but at least the leads look gorgeous (bright side, eh?).

From the trailer I found Johnson's look to be very bare faced with just a hint of pink on her lips and cheeks, with some nude shadow and mascara. I started off the look with the most natural base I have (and one of my favorites), Natura Bisse's The Cure Sheer Cream. I followed that up with their Cure Sheer Eye, and then my By Terry Touche Veloutee to highlight underneath my eyes.

For my lips I just wanted a hint of pink, so I used a combination my Maybelline Baby Lips with the Lush Power Pigment in Believe. For my cheeks I added a pop of color using the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Blissful. Finally, I took out my Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette to add just a hint of definition around my eyes. On the lid I used the matte-nude shade Foxy and then outlined my eyes with just a tiny bit of the dark brown shade Busted. I finished off my eyes with my Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes Mascara, and then filled in my brows with my Anastasia Brow Wiz pencil.

And that's just about it! It's a super minimal, simple look that I could absolutely see myself wearing during the day, especially in the Fall. Might've been a strange takeaway from a trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey, but personally I love taking beauty inspiration from any and everything.

  1. I tried reading the books but I just can't get past the terrible writing. I've read much better stories.. I have kind of a secret adult blog dedicated to romance and more adult books.. let me know if you ever need a recommendation lol.

  2. I agree, the writing was just plain horrible. I found myself continuing to read it to try and figure out Christian Grey's psychological issues but there really wasn't that much depth to the novels so continuing to read it provided to be a bit futile haha. Thanks so much for stopping by and reading!
