Summer Polish

If you haven't noticed already, I'm a little ADD when it comes to makeup (and life in general, I suppose). Because of this, I change up my makeup routine constantly, and the easiest (read: cheapest) way to do this is through nail polish. I love changing up my nail polish color week to week, and one of my favorite times of year to do this is during the summer, when it's finally socially acceptable to wear the bright, vibrant colors that I crave year-round. While my nail color is constantly changing, there are a handful of polishes I've been rotating through that I thought I'd share with you guys.

As you can tell, I'm a bit of an Essie snob. While I use other brands (everything from OPI, to Sephora, to Rimmel), I come back to Essie time and time again for its lovely color selection and finish.  I am constantly chipping my nails (I don't know how because, let's face it, I'm not a very active person), so finding a polish that doesn't chip on me would be an impossibly task. However, I find that Essie polishes last on me longer without chipping than other brands, so I keep returning to their selection. The polishes usually run anywhere from $8-$9 a pop, which isn't terribly economical, but a store in my local mall sells them for $4 each so I usually stock up on my colors there.

The colors I've been using most (pictured above, starting from the far left hot pink color and going in clockwise order) are Style Hunter, Mojito Madness, Resort Fling, Bikini So Teeny, In the Cab-ana, Hide & Go Chic and Spin the Bottle. While I tend to wear lots of blues (and I definitely have a few in the selection here), I actually really loved a few pinks and nudes, which is quite unlike me.

To start with, Style Hunter is described as a "laser shop crimson", which is a fancy way of saying it's basically a hot pink magenta. I normally shy away from this color polish, but have found myself wearing this quite a bit recently! It's a really fun, vibrant shade for summer that I've personally found to be quite lovely.

I originally picked up Mojito Madness to wear on St. Patty's day (it is, after all, described as a "vibrant lime green"), but I've actually really been loving it recently for warm weather days! The green is definitely something different, in a good way. It is certainly a bright color and one that is incredibly pigmented, which is fantastic because it really only takes 1-2 coats to get a great color.

Resort Fling is a "alluring coral peach" which, as the name suggests, reminded me of a polish I'd wear on vacation to a tropical location. I am absolutely in love with the color, which is perfect for warm weather because it actually helps fool the eyes into making me look like I'm actually tan. My one gripe with this particular shade is it takes several layers of polish to get the desired look. It is very sheer, and so unfortunately it can be quite hard to get an opaque color from this polish.

Bikini So Teeny is one that I believe I reviewed awhile back, and I'm still loving it and wearing it a lot! It's described on Essie's website as a "cornflower blue", but I'm going to have to say that's a bit misleading because it is undeniably a lavender color. But props to Essie for the snazzy description. Anyways this stuff only takes about 2 coats to become opaque, and the color is just wonderful.

In the Cab-ana might just be my favorite of the bunch, because the color (a "self-assured aqua azure"...whatever that means) just reminds me of clear blue oceans and swimming pools. I mean, how much more summer-y can you get?! The color is bright and happy, which are my favorite qualities in any polish! This is actually the color I'm wearing right now, and I really have nothing but great things to say about it.

I believe Hide & Go Chic was another one I talked about earlier in the year. As I said before, I love my blue polishes, and this is one that I really could see myself wearing all year-round. It's bright and cheery enough for summer, but the blue is also dark enough that it's not too crazy looking for the cooler months. All in all, this one will be in my stash for some time to come.

Finally, there's the nude sheer colored Spin the Bottle. This pinky beige color is a great nude, and it's what I've been wearing on any and all job interviews. While I love my vibrant colors, I think it's important for every girl to have a nude polish in her collection, and this option doesn't disappoint! While the color is fairly sheer, I never find that I really need more than 2 coats of it to get the color opaque, which is quite good! Overall, while this might be the more "boring" of all the colors, it was a great necessity piece to pick up and one that I turn to for any "formal" events in my life.

What have your favorite polishes been so far this season?

  1. I haven't tried Essie's nail polish yet. I love all the colours you have. Especially resort fling. I think coral colours are so perfect for summer! It is a bit annoying that you have to use so many layers of it though. I get so impatient waiting for coats of nail polish to dry! x

    1. Essie has an amazing selection of polish colors, which is a big reason I'm always drawn to them! Resort Fling really is gorgeous (like you said, so perfect for summer!) but I'm like you and I get super impatient waiting for it to dry, so having to layer it a lot is a pain! Thanks so much for reading, Georgia! :)
